A general surgery screening programme was held on February 24 at village Varada in district Sirohi. A screening programme for patients with ENT and general surgery ailments was held at Sayla, in district Jalore, on February 6. The venue of the programme was the Government Hospital in Sayla. In all, 125 patients consulted ENT surgeon Dr Sharad Mehta and general surgeon Dr Digant Pathak. Twenty patients were advised to visit the base hospital for further treatment.

General Surgery Department: Screening programme
General surgeon Dr Sanjay Varma screened 72 patients during a screening programme at Bali, in district Pali. Sixteen patients were found to have surgical problems and referred to J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre, Mount Abu, for further treatment. Another 13 were advised to undergo investigative procedures.

Surgery Clinic
On April 24, J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre launched a new surgery clinic at the Rathi-Agarwal Hospital in Jalore. Surgical gastroenterologist & laparoscopic surgeon Dr Dilip Kothari will be available for nominally-priced consultations in Jalore on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month. Forty one patients took benefit from the first such clinic, five of whom were referred to Global Hospital, Mount Abu, for surgery while another six were advised to undergo endoscopy examinations and 29 patients were prescribed medication.

Dr Dilip Kothari, surgical gastroenterologist & laparoscopic surgeon, conducted a screening programme at village Ahore in district Jalore on March 19. Village Ahore falls in a less developed tribal belt as a result of which most of its residents are economically underprivileged. Dr Kothari screened 60 patients of whom 10 were referred to Global Hospital, Mount Abu for surgery. Twenty five more patients were referred to the base hospital for further diagnostic tests.

Outreach endeavour: Department of General Surgery
Consultant general surgeon Dr S K Varma conducted a screening programme in village Bali (in district Pali) on February 4. The total number of patients screened was 170, of whom 30 patients found to need surgery were referred to Global Hospital.
A second general surgery screening programme was held at village Amirgadh (in district Palanpur, Gujarat), where surgical gastroenterologist & laparoscopic surgeon Dr Dilip Kothari screened 150 patients and found 35 needing further treatment.

On November 11, general surgeon Dr Sanjay Varma and surgical registrar Dr Nabajyoti Upadhyaya of the Department of General Surgery of J Watumull Global
Hospital & Research Centre conducted a screening programme at Sanchor in district Jalore. The Brahma Kumaris (BK) centre of Sanchor was instrumental in helping to organise this event at the Bechra Dharamshala. In all, 174 patients were screened of whom 35 were found to need surgery and were referred to the hospital for operative procedures. Another 30 patients were found to require diagnostic procedures, mainly sonography and endoscopy.
Prior to the programme, we organized a symposium for leaders of various local organizations like the Bajrang Dal, Manav Seva Samitee, social workers, sarpanch, political leaders, school principals and pharmacy owners. Consultant surgical gastroenterologist & laparoscopic surgeon Dr Dilip Kothari made a presentation on the medical facilities available at the hospital to this gathering of about 35 people. Dr Kothari was also interviewed by journalists of leading local newspapers, namely Bhaskar, Maru Lahar, Rashtra Doot and Navjyoti, as a result of which the screening programme on the ensuing day was a major success.
We organised a CME on the subject Disorder of the Upper Abdomen at the Reodar primary health centre (PHC) on November 4. This was a novel initiative for
medical officers and nurses working in the government sector. In addition to sharing medical information, the CME was aimed at creating awareness about the medical facilities available at the units of the Global Hospital & Research Centre trust at Mount Abu and Abu Road. In all, 8 doctors and 46 nurses attended the programme.Dr Dilip Kothari, consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon at J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre (Mount Abu) conducted the programme. Afterwards, Dr Kothari visited a few local GPs to strengthen our referral system.
