Screening programme: Department of General Surgery

Cardiologist Dr Haresh Mehta from BSES MG Hospital was consulted by 36 patients during his visit on July 9 and 10. He also performed ten 2D echo investigations and supervised six TMTs. Gastroenterologist Dr Sandeep Shah, also from BSES MG Hospital proffered his advice to 32 patients and performed two endoscopy investigations.

Cervical Cancer Awareness

Two awareness programmes on cervical cancer were held for the benefit of women in Mount Abu on May 21 and June 4. These programmes were attended by 69 women. Gynaecologist Dr Saurbhi Singh and gynae oncologist Dr Chandrakant Shah spoke to the women about the gynae services available at Global Hospital and methods for the early detection of cervical cancer.

This follows the absorption of four of our optometry students by Titan Eye+ exclusive optical stores in Gujarat. Visit to USA

The American Society of Addiction Medicine invited senior consultant and head, Department of Neuropsychiatry & Deaddiction, Dr Nikhil Patel as guest speaker for their annual conference held in Washington, DC, from April 14 to 17.Dr Patel spoke about Integration of Indian Culture, Yoga & Meditation in Addiction Management during the international symposium on April 15. His 30 minute talk was followed by a Q/A session. The three other speakers at the international symposium were from Brazil, Finland, and Holland.During his fortnights stay in USA, Dr Patel also addressed several gatherings on subjects like holistic health, stress management, and spirituality and mental health. Dr Patel also had an action-packed five day visit to Bogota, Columbia, where his radio and TV interviews, press conferences, and lectures in a medical college, hospital and university were well received.

Consultant neuropsychiatrist Dr Nikhil Patel has been appointed as an examiner for the MD/Diploma (Psychiatry) exam conducted by S N Medical College, Jodhpur, for the academic year 2001-12. Service visit by Neuropsychiatrist Dr Nikhil Patel

Consultant neuropsychiatrist Dr Nikhil Patel delivered a variety of lectures during his visit to Colombia in April 2011. He also conducted cable TV and radio interviews and was covered well by a local newspaper. The radio interview was held over two session with an average audience of 300,000 people.

CME: Management of head injury

A CME on Management of head injury was held at GHTC on February 26. Dr Manish Rathi, neurosurgeon from Rajasthan Hospitals, Ahmedabad, addressed the gathering. Anaesthetist Dr Vikrant Saxenaof Abu Road also spoke on basic life support. The CME was well attended by about 45 doctors from Abu Road and its surrounding areas like JK Puram etc.

Anaesthesia Workshop

An informative hands-on training programme in Ultrasound Guided Nerve Blocks was successfully organised by department of anaesthesiology on March 19 20. The 25 anaesthesiologists who participated in this programme had the opportunity to practice on a gel phanton and interact with the key trainer, Dr Elie Joseph Chidiac, an anaesthesiologist in the field of regional anaesthesia from Detroit Medical Centre, USA. Dr Shvetank Agarwal, cardiac anaesthesiologist from Detroit, assisted Dr Chidiac. Sonosite and GE provided two ultrasound machines each for the training.

Training programme: Disaster management

On the request of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre imparted training in "BLS / CPR and Disaster Management" for 418 NDRF personnel and eight instructors of Swami Vivekanand Institute of Mountaineering (SVIM) of Mount Abu. Consultant physician Dr Sachin spoke on BLS and CPR and Dr Nabajyoti Upadhyaya, medical officer of the surgery department talked about Disasters and their medical management. Shashibala Gupta, the principal of the Global Hospital School of Nursing addressed the group on Burns management and Sister Binny, manager - mass media & PR, lectured them on keeping a positive attitude.

Screening programme: Eye diseases

The Brigadier Vora Clinic & Jyoti Bindu Diagnostic Centre organised a diagnostic and treatment programme for eye diseases on February 13. Dr J K Patel, Dr Ketanbhai Patel and Dr Sushmaben Desai, all senior ophthalmologists at Baroda, rendered their free services for this event. In all, 129 patients took benefit from the services. The most common ailments found were conjunctivitis, blephritis, errors of refraction, and cataract.

A screening programme for patients with ENT and general surgery ailments was held at Sayla, in district Jalore, on February 6. The venue of the programme was the Government Hospital in Sayla. Screening programme

A screening programme held at Sanchore in district Jalore on January 23 was well attended.

General surgeon Dr Digant Pathak was consulted by 102 patients, of whom 17 were referred to J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre for surgery and five were referred for further diagnosis. Gynaecologist Dr Saurabhi Singh saw 119 patients and identified 12 as needing surgical interventions. Dental surgeon Dr Laxmi Patil (seen in photograph) was consulted by 45 patients while 21 patients presented to paediatrician Dr Yogesh Jyori.

Upcoming Event: Anaesthesia workshop

J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre will host a two-day anaesthesia workshop on Ultrasound Guided Peripheral Nerve Blocks (Single-Shot and Continuous Catheter Techniques) on March 19 – 20, 2011. Dr. Elie Joseph Chidiac, an anesthesiologist from Wayne State University, Detroit (Michigan), USA, and an internationally renowned authority on this innovative technology will be the special guest and the scientific speaker at this event. The workshop will be intuitively structured with a brilliant blend of didactics, hands-on demonstrations and training using ultrasound machines on gel dummies and healthy volunteers. Launch: Vision Centre

Thanks to the support of the P C Parmar Foundation of Pune, we commissioned the Global Hospital Vision Centre at village Kalindri in district Sirohi in December. This follows the launch of the vision centre in Raniwada a year ago. The two vision centres function as rural eye clnics for the benefit of the community. They are well equipped - modern diagnostic aids such as a slit lamp, lensometer, trial set for refractions, ophthalmoscope, retinoscope, autoclave, and minor instruments enable a wide range of examinations for which the community would otherwise have to travel afar.

CME: Blood Banking

The Rotary International Global Hospital Blood Bank at the GHTC organised a district-level continuing medical education (CME) programme on the Rational use of blood & blood components on December 19. About 140 people from Rajasthan and Gujarat participated in this event sponsored by the Blood Safety Division of the Rajasthan State Aids Control Society (RSACS). Postgraduate course in family medicine

J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre has been accredited by the National Board of Examinations (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India) to offer a three-year post-graduate medical programme, DNB in Family Medicine (New Regulations). The course will train doctors in family medicine. We will offer two seats.

For those who haven’t heard of the National Board of Examinations (NBE), it was established by the Government of India in 1975. The NBE conducts postgraduate and postdoctoral medical examinations in approved specialties leading to the award of Diplomate of National Board (DNB). The Diplomate qualifications awarded by the NBE have been equated with postgraduate and postdoctoral degrees awarded by other Indian Universities (such as MD/ MS/ DM/ MCh) for all purposes including appointments to specialist’s posts and teaching positions (lecturers or assistant professors) by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

DNB (Family Medicine) is a residency-based training-cum-employment programme. The next session will start in January 2011. Candidates having a recognized MBBS degree and registered with the Medical Council of India or a State Medical Council would be eligible to apply for the course. There is no CET-NBE Examination to join the course. The candidates will be selected on the basis of a screening test/interview. The selected candidates will receive a monthly stipend as per NBE guidelines and he/she has to deposit Rs.50000/- with the hospital as the annual training fee.

The three-year PG programme encompasses both academic and clinical aspects of family medicine. Doctors must compulsorily rotate in different departments – general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, casualty and emergency care.

Multispecialty programme

A multi-specialty consultation and screening programme organised in Bali on October 31 went off very well. It was attended by ENT surgeon Dr Sharad Mehta, general surgeon Dr Digant Pathak, physician Dr Sachin Sukhsohale and dentists Dr Laxmi Patil, Dr Girish, and Dr Rajbir.

In all, 413 patients consulted the specialists, about 100 per discipline. Seventy nine patients were referred to J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre, for further treatment or investigations. The consultants also distributed medicines to needy patients for no charge.

Inaugural Ceremony of Shivmani Home

The inaugural ceremony of the Shivmani Home, a residence for the elderly, was held on October 22, 2010. The facility was jointly inaugurated by Dadi Janki, administrative head, Brahma Kumaris, Dadi Hridaymohini, additional administrative head, Brahma Kumaris, and Dadi Ratan Mohini, joint administrative head of the Brahma Kumaris, in the presence of Mahesh Patel and his family who have funded the establishment of the home.The home has 60 well-appointed rooms, including 8 suits, almost all of which (the suites) have already been booked. Cardiology check-up

Seventeen patients took benefit from a cardiology check-up programme organised for residents of Mount Abu on October 23. They underwent laboratory tests such as random blood sugar, urine albumin and total cholesterol free of charge. They were also offered 30 percent off on the cost of TMT and 2-D Echo diagnosis. Five patients were advised to undergo TMTs and three were recommended to undergo 2-D Echo's.

Treating Road Traffic Accident (RTA) cases

Eleven RTA victims were brought to J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre, Mount Abu, on October 7. They had suffered miscellaneous injuries to the abdomen, head and shoulder. One needed dental interventions and two more needed stitches. The casualty team at the hospital attended to them promptly. The victims were villagers from villages Eesra and Ker, who were travelling back to their homes in a jeep when the vehicle turned over on the road downhill.

Urology surgery

Visiting laparoscopic surgeon (from Chennai) Dr T Arasu operated on four patients during a laparoscopic surgery programme arranged on September 14 and 15. Three of these were laparoscopic cholecystectomy's and one was a mesh repair for incisional hernia. Four more patients had gastrointestinal endoscopies done. An ENT screening programme was organised at Kalindri in district Sirohi on September 5. Another 5 patients were signed up to be included in an ongoing Indian Council of Medical Research sponsored ENT research project which is being led by Dr Mehta.

India Giving Challenge

GiveIndia is a donation platform that allows donors to support a cause of their own choice from about 200 listed Indian NGOs that have been scrutinised for transparency and credibility. GiveIndia also establishes a detailed feedback process wherein NGOs inform donors (via GiveIndia) about the recipient of the donation. That way, donors receive proof of their donation having reached a needy person. J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre is listed on the GiveIndia website.

GiveIndia has planned the second edition of their 40 day long India Giving Challenge from September 8 to October 20, 2010. J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre has setup a page (called iGive page) on the GiveIndia site to raise Rs.50 lakhs to be utilised for these purposes:·

Rs.500,000 for medicines for a mobile clinic revolving around 100 villages in district Sirohi, Rajasthan·
Rs.300,000 for ophthalmology screening programmes planned to be undertaken during the six months beginning November 2010·
Rs.30,00,000 for a fund created to collect enough money to buy a new CT Scan·
Rs.12,00,000 for a bus for the Global Hospital Nursing College

Indian donors will be issued section 80G receipts for their contributions. Sadly, foreign donors can’t avail tax benefits on India Giving Challenge donations :(

Last year, 60 NGOs raised over Rs.90 lakhs from 5,000+ donors. Their effort became even more rewarding with a matching grant of Rs.50 lakhs from GiveIndia. The matching grant was given for fundraising in different categories to winning NGOs, that is, those that had raised the most donations. This year, Give India is giving away a total matching grant of Rs.65 lakhs including 13 NGO champion prizes amounting to Rs.35 lakhs. The topmost NGO will get a matching grant of Rs.10 lakhs.

Plastic surgery screening programme

On August 31, plastic surgeon Dr Parth Sadhu conducted a screening programme at Bhinmal in district Jalore. Twenty two patients took benefit from his expertise. Of these, 18 were referred to J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre at Mount Abu for surgical interventions. The patients included children with congenital external ear defects and individuals with finger deformities caused by burns or facial scars caused by trauma.

Values in Healthcare: A Spiritual Approach (VIHASA)

On August 21, Shivali Upadhyay, senior assistant - Purchase & Claims (seen in white in the adjacent photo), helped facilitate a one-day Values in Healthcare: A Spiritual Approach (VIHASA) programme on the theme "Compassion" at the Reliance Energy Management Institute (REMI) in Mumbai. The programme was participated by 31 staff from hospitals in Mumbai. Global Hospital & Research Centre trustee Dr Ashok Mehta, also national coordinator, VIHASA India, and Dr Deepak Dave of BSES MG Hospital were the lead facilitators.

We are grateful to urologist Dr Rajendra Yadav and uro-gynae surgeon Dr Nitika Sobti, both from Max Hospital, Delhi, for conducting seven urology and uro-gynae surgeries during their visit on July 31 and August 1. They were assisted by our surgical team including gynaecologist Dr Saurbhi Singh, laparoscopic surgeon Dr Dilip Kothari, general surgeon Dr Sanjay Verma, and surgical registrar Dr Nabajyoti Upadhyaya.The patients who underwent operations were earlier screened in Sanchore - where 149 patients in all took benefit of the free consultations offered by Dr Sanjay Verma and Dr Saurbhi Singh. Training: Lean Healthcare

On July 17 and 18, about 20 staff members of J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre participated in a two-day training programme on Lean Healthcare conducted by H T Mehta, joint general manager and Sharad K Talvalkar, deputy general manager - strategic initiatives, Larson & Toubro Limited's Electrical & Electronics Division.

Lean Healthcare is a learning system that teaches problem-solving skills. Lean Thinking, the conceptual basis of Lean Healthcare, proposes that every activity be viewed as Value Added (VA) or Non-Value Added (NVA) with respect to providing value to the patient. For instance, patient waiting time is NVA and nurses searching for suppies are NVA. Every NVA is seen as waste. Lean Healthcare uses a structured process to identify and eliminate wate in every hospital work processes. Participating staff learned to apply lean tools. A follow-up session will be held on August 5.

Lectures by Neuropsychiatrist

Consultant neuropsychiatrist Dr Nikhil Patel was invited to deliver lectures to more than 100 trainees attending at a course at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s Internal Security Academy (ISA) at Mount Abu. Practical Training: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

About 100 participants, including jawans and officers from the CRPF and Army, members of the Lions and Rotary Club and individual residents of Mount Abu participated in a training programme on CPR conducted at Global Hospital on Sunday, July 18.

We are enormously grateful to Dr Manoj Singh, chief intensivist, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, for conducting the training. Dr Anshul Wadhwa, physician, J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre, and Sister Archana, assistant manager - Hospital Promtion Services, organised the event.

CPR is a life-saving technique used in medical emergencies, such as to save a patient who has had a heart attack or nearly drowned to death, to get oxygen to the brain and keep the brain alive until further medical care may be given.

Launch of Indian Council of Medical Research funded ENT Project

We are pleased to announce that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is funding a three-year study titled Clinico microbiological study of chronic otitis media with reference to pseudomonas and related species. The study will be conducted by J Watumull Global Hospital and Research Centre with Dr Sharad Mehta, consultant ENT surgeon as the principal investigator.

The project aims to determine the relation between different types of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), that is, an ear condition resulting from the chronic infection of the middle ear characterised by persistent ear discharge and deafness. The study will investigate the changing spectrum of antibiotic sensitivity of COSM. Very few studies in Rajasthan have correlated the organism grown on culture and type of CSOM with the efficacy of topical antibiotic ear drops at drying the ear. Recently it has been observed that more cases of a certain type (TT type) of CSOM are showing the growth of pseudomonas SPPS which responds to limited antibiotics. This development is of concern considering the increasing resistance to antibiotics in the general population. Further study is required to understand pseudomonas and its various species, especially those found in TT type of CSOM and their antibiotic sensitivity. TT type of CSOM is more common in paediatric patients. Dr Mehta will also study the microbiological profile of CSOM with specific reference to pseudomonas and its various species in Garassia (tribal) patients with the aim of determining whether topical antibiotic ear drops alone are sufficient in controlling the infection and drying the ear.

The effective treatment of CSOM depends on knowledge of local pattern of disease, the prevalence of the organism and its sensitivity to different antibiotics. No study has been done on the microbiology of CSOM in tribals in Sirohi district or elsewhere. Dr Mehta will study around 600 patients of CSOM over the next three years.

Here, Dr Mehta is seen examining a child during an ear screening camp organised at the Delwada Secondary School in Mount Abu on July 8. In all, he screened 45 children with various ear problems. One child suffering from CSOM was enrolled for the study. Eight more children were referred for audiometry investigation that will be done free of cost at Global Hospital.

Public programme on Mental Health

On June 29, Sudhakar Dave, medical social worker, G V Modi Rural Health Care, addressed more than 40 senior citizens on the importance of mental health and brain wellness. Dave also showed the audience how to identify symptoms of depression. This tip is especially useful since it is estimated that 10 percent of the elderly population suffers from depression. The participants filled up depression evaluation forms based on the geriatric depression scale. A few volunteer sisters from the Global Hospital Institute of Ophthalmology also conducted a guided meditation session and spoke about the need to develop pure feelings and pure thoughts for the self and family.

Director's overseas tour

Dr Partap Midha, director, J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre is touring UK, USA, Colombia and Ecuador, spreading word of his experience of practicing Rajyoga meditation and working in the health sector in rural India. Of the many service programmes organised, an evening with world renowned flutist Deepak Ram held at the Anubhuti Retreat Centre in Novato (USA) is possibly the most unusual.

The event, a benefit concert for the J Watumull Global Hosital & Research Centre, was co-sponsored by the Point of Life Foundation and the Anubhuti Retreat Centre. Deepak Ram with Satish Tare on the tabla took the audience on a journey to a world of quiet beauty and gentle reflection. Ram played traditional North Indian classical music commonly called ragas. The music was both haunting and mystical, but exciting enough to engage the brain in to gentle head nodding. After the first hour, the entire audience composed of a medley of curious listeners and seasoned music lovers appeared satisfied.

During a brief intermission, Dr Midha spoke about the medical and holistic services being offered to underpriviledged villages in the outlying areas of Mount Abu. He also shared details of the treatment and surgeries being offered by the hospital. The audience was informed of the priority areas of the hospital - caring for the immediate needs of women and the ongoing care of the local children. Dr Midha concluded that one of the main aims of the hospital is to honour the dignity of people and that healthcare should be available to every segment of society.

The second half of the musical evening saw Ram being joined by the Steps Jazz Quartet including Steve Roberts, Daniel Lewis and Bob Bassa. Together, they delivered another outstanding hour of perfect jazz. The evening concluded with an indelible piece called Space Time - it elevated the audience to the unlimited realm.

Training programme for health workers

Twenty five health workers engaged in identifying and following up the treatment of tuberculosis patients participated in a training programme organised at the Radha Mohan Mehrotra Trauma Centre at Abu Road on June 13.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple’s operation) – This operation is performed to treat cancerous tumours on the head of the pancreas, malignant tumours involving the common bile duct or duodenum near the pancreas. Pancreaticoduodenectomy is a major surgical procedure.

Chronic pancreatitis:
Chronic pancreatitis happens when the pancreas sustain widespread injury – extensive scaring or even destruction. The condition is mostly frequently associated with alcohol abuse and excessive smoking. However, the condition may also develop without any apparent cause. Patients with chronic pancreatitis are at risk for developing the following problems:

Severe longstanding pain

Whipple's operation
Puestow (Drainage procedure)
Beger’s procedure to resection the head of the pancreas – a useful procedure as it provides relief from the severe pain accompanying chronic pancreatitis in approximately 80% of patients
Frey’s procedure, which involves performing both a pancreatic head resection procedure as well as a drainage procedure to core out the diseased parts of the head of the pancreas. A lateral pancreaticojejunostomy (LRLPJ) is then performed wherein a loop of the jejunum is mobilized and attached to the exposed pancreatic duct to allow better drainage of the pancreas, including its head.

Acute pancreatitis:
Acute pancreatitis is sudden inflammation of the pancreas. Depending on its severity, it can have severe complications and may result in mortality. The most common cause of death in acute pancreatitis is secondary infection. While mild cases are often successfully treated with conservative measures, such as NPO (nil by mouth or NBM) and IV fluid rehydration, severe cases may require admission to the ICU or even surgery (often requiring more than one intervention) to deal with complications of the disease. Surgery is indicated for (i) infected pancreatic necrosis and (ii) complications like bleeding. We offer Necrosectomy procedure for this condition to remove the dead infected pancreas.

Pseudocysts:
A pancreatic pseudocyst is a collection of fluid around the pancreas. The fluid in the cyst is usually pancreatic juice that has leaked out of a damaged pancreatic duct. Pancreatic pseudocysts arise after acute pancreatitis or chronic pancreatitis. In the surgical procedure for the treatment of pseudocyst a connection is created between the cyst and an adjacent intestinal organ to which the cyst is adherent to, such as the stomach. This connection allows the cyst to drain into the stomach. Pancreatic pseudocysts are operated on by a laparoscopic procedure or open surgery.

Dust-bin making competition

Students from five leading schools of Mount Abu marched into J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre on Sunday, March 7, holding...dust-bins, if you please!

Yes, the students from St Mary's School, St Rajeshwar School, Sofia School, Adarsh Vidya Mandir and St Michael's School were taking part in an eco-friendly dust-bins making competition that required them to create dustbins out of innovative eco-friendly materials. The dustbins had to be capable of holding waste-paper. The judges had a hard time choosing the best out of the 25 innovative entries!

After the competition, the students attended a talk by Sister Sonia from Copenhagen, who shared interesting information she picked up while attending the World Business Summit on Climate Change held in the city in December 2009. Subsequently, students from Sofia School presented a dance while a group of boys from AVM School put up a skit. Then, students from the School for the Blind held the audience spellbound with a melodious song!

This event was part of a Green Drive being implemented by Global Hospital, which includes the recycling waste-paper and banning the use of all plastic bags. Hence, the management was very pleased when the principals of two leading school expressed an interest in following suit in recycling waste-paper.

Talk: The Therapeutic Labyrinth Garden

Revd Lizzie Hopthrow, the chaplain of the Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury, UK, presented details of an interesting project called "The Therapeutic Labyrinth Garden" to staff during a picnic arranged at Peace Park on January 26, 2010.

The premise behind the Therapeutic Labyrinth Garden is that a labyrinth, a single path that winds to a central point and out again - unlike a maze, which has dead-ends and false starts and so can induce anxiety because it is difficult to find your way - frequently induces spiritual or emotional calm and can even help in decision-making. For these reasons, a labyrinth is counted as a timeless mystical and spiritual tool that is poignantly relevant to people approaching death and their loved ones coping with bereavement. Based on the ancient ideas of pattern and spiral, the winding nature of a labyrinth draws us into not only the centre of the labyrinth itself but also into the centre of our selves. There we may face our deepest fears, hopes or longings and there is the place of inner healing or enlightenment. When a labyrinth is walked, the analytical left hand side of the brain gives way to the more intuitive right hand side and we are led by the path away from stressful thoughts into stillness. The labyrinth thus leads us into the spiritual part of our being and gives us the potential for inner transformation. As we walk towards the centre we may become released from stresses and strains, hurts or concerns that cause us tension or emotional or spiritual pain. We let go of anxious thoughts or situations and may enter into prayer At the centre we pause to receive a blessing, peace of heart, a moment of relief or enlightenment, a deep sense of calm, a creative idea or a resolution. On the way out again we return to the world taking with us our experience of the labyrinth.

Green Endeavour - Recycling paper

Health Awareness Drive for Drivers

On January 8, in association with the Lions Club of Mount Abu and the local traffic police, Global Hospital arranged a health check-up cum awareness drive for drivers of jeeps, the local mode of transportation for tourists to the hill station. The drivers underwent blood pressure and diabetes checks. Consultant neuropsychiatrist Dr Nikhil Patel also addressed the drivers on the need and means to stay stress-free by managing anger and avoiding the temptations of drug abuse. Vision Centre

P C Parmar Global Hospital Eye Care Centre (Abu Road) is all set to launch a new Vision Centre at village Raniwada in Jalore district. This is part of a new initiative by NGOs/hospitals partnering the Government of India in implementing Vision 2020 to reach out to patients in a rural area. The Vision Centre will be staffed by a field worker and an optometrist. It will conduct eye examinations and refer patients needing further treatment or surgery to the base hospital. The Centre will also house an optical shop to dispense spectacles.

We organised a diabetes screening programme for 100 middle aged employees of Tirupati Fibres, a company located in the industrial belt of Abu Road. The programme, sponsored by a pharmaceutical company, was a great opportunity for our marketing team led by Sister Archana to share details of services offered by Global Hospital units at Mount Abu and Abu Road.

Outpost clinic

J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre (Mount Abu) in association with its branch unit, the Radha Mohan Mehrotra Global Hospital Trauma Centre (Abu Road), has launched a new outpost clinic at village Mandar in Sirohi district. This development follows a tie-up with Mahaveer Hospital to run a multidisciplinary clinic every fortnight on the premises of the hospital. The clinic will offer out-patient consultations in the disciplines of ENT, general surgery, ophthalmology and orthopaedics for very nominal charges.

At the first clinic held on November 28, general surgeon Dr Dilip Kothari saw 17 patients, ophthalmologist Dr Sudhir Singh served 35 patients, ENT surgeon Dr Sharad Mehta proferred his advice to 7 patients while orthopaedic surgeon Dr M C Vaishnav was consulted by 21 patients.

We hope this endeavour will increase the flow of referred cases in our hospitals at Abu Road and Mount Abu.

Shivmani Home: An Old Age Home

Celebrating World Diabetes Day

Global Hospital (Mount Abu) celebrated World Diabetes Day on November 17. Director Dr Partap Midha kickstarted the programme with a welcome to the audience and chief guest Satpal Kapoor, DIGP, Internal Security Academy, CRPF.

Subsequently, the event was marked by a number of brief useful lectures on a host of topics of interest to persons suffering from diabetes. Consultant ophthalmologist Dr Sudhir Singh spoke about eye problems afflicting diabetics, physician Dr Anshul Wadhwa talked about heart problems in diabetes and dietician Mukti Wadhwa elucidated the role of diet in managing diabetes. Consultant neuropsychiatrist Dr Nikhil Patel explained behavioural therapy for diabetics, senior dental surgeon Dr Niranjan spoke about dental problems in diabetes, pathologist Dr Divyesh Goswami delivered a talk on laboratory tests used to monitor diabetes and Dr Sanjay Varma described foot problems afflicting diabetics.

Then, diabetologist and anaesthetist Dr Shrimant Sahu presented the services of the Diabetes Clinic after which his assistant Sr Savita closed the proceedings with a vote of thanks.

All the participants were offered a free check-up for diabetes.

General surgery screening programme

On November 11, general surgeon Dr Sanjay Varma and surgical registrar Dr Nabajyoti Upadhyaya of the Department of General Surgery of J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre conducted a screening programme at Sanchor in district Jalore. The Brahma Kumaris (BK) centre of Sanchor was instrumental in helping to organise this event at the Bechra Dharamshala. In all, 174 patients were screened of whom 35 were found to need surgery and were referred to the hospital for operative procedures. Another 30 patients were found to require diagnostic procedures, mainly sonography and endoscopy.

Prior to the programme, we organized a symposium for leaders of various local organizations like the Bajrang Dal, Manav Seva Samitee, social workers, sarpanch, political leaders, school principals and pharmacy owners. Consultant surgical gastroenterologist & laparoscopic surgeon Dr Dilip Kothari made a presentation on the medical facilities available at the hospital to this gathering of about 35 people. Dr Kothari was also interviewed by journalists of leading local newspapers, namely Bhaskar, Maru Lahar, Rashtra Doot and Navjyoti, as a result of which the screening programme on the ensuing day was a major success.

CME for medical professionals working in the government sector

We organised a CME on the subject Disorder of the Upper Abdomen at the Reodar primary health centre (PHC) on November 4. This was a novel initiative for medical officers and nurses working in the government sector. In addition to sharing medical information, the CME was aimed at creating awareness about the medical facilities available at the units of the Global Hospital & Research Centre trust at Mount Abu and Abu Road. In all, 8 doctors and 46 nurses attended the programme.

Dr Dilip Kothari, consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon at J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre (Mount Abu) conducted the programme. Afterwards, Dr Kothari visited a few local GPs to strengthen our referral system.

Ongoing flood relief work in Karnataka

Tuesday, October 27 - Our team visited Chimmalagi village of Badami Taluka in Bagalkot district, where it treated 310 patients. A group of volunteer members of the Brahma Kumaris also distributed bedsheets, dhotis and towels to the village people.

Thursday, October 29 - Village Girisagar in district Bagalkot was the focus of our efforts, where 274 patients were attended and distributed free medicines.

Ongoing flood relief work in Karnataka

Wednesday, October 21 - Village Gangihaal (population 1300) and village Bisanaalkoppa (population 1200) both lie on the banks of the Malaprabha river in Bagalkot district. The tragedy of Bisanalkoppa is that every home in the village was damaged. Many occupants have been relocated to makeshift camps in other places while a few remain there in tin sheds. Our team attended and distributed medicine to 221 patients, making do with a tin-roofed shed for a clinic. An auxiliary nurse and midwife (ANM) from the local primary health centre helped prepare malaria slides for patients suspected of suffering from malarial fever. The team encountered a sense of frustration and insecurity in this area. There is a desperate need for clean drinking water in the villages. The unsanitary conditions also attract hordes of small insects after sunset.

Thursday, October 22 - The team attended 147 patients in village Kalasakoppa in Bagalkot district. Sister Laxmi from Mysore distributed clothes to poor villagers who lost their belongings due to flooding.

Friday, October 23 - The residents of villages Kotnalli and Kataginahalli in Bagalkot district have no access to healthcare since the flooding. The team examined and distributed medicines to 270 patients in these two villages.

Saturday, October 24 - Around 700 patients took benefit from a mega health camp arranged in villages Layadgundi and Nagaral.

Sunday, October 25 - Our team accompanied by five more doctors and pharmacists visited the flood affected villages of Bagalkot district Sarabadagi, Katapur, Mangalur and Hire Nasabi. In all, 511 patients were served and distributed medicine. A large number of people were also given blankets.

Monday, October 26 - Our team served 506 patients in villages Katapur and Mangalgudda, both of which have been severely affected by the flooding.

Thursday, October 15 - Bommanagi village in district Bagalkot, Karnataka was severely affected by flooding, with more than 70 percent of its houses collapsing due to the flood waters. The team served 210 villagers, distributing free medicines and blankets to poor patients.

Friday, October 16 - The focus was Kovalli village in Bilagi taluka in district Bagalkot. The medical officer from the local primary health centre (PHC) joined the Global Hospital team, which served and distributed free medicines to 95 patients as well as distributed blankets to the poor. On the same day, the team visited Birnur village in Badami taluka in Bagalkot district, again an area severely affected by flooding from the river Malaprabha with close to three-fourths of its houses damaged. The team attended 220 patients in this village.

Dr Mahesh sent this update on the teams' activities:

Sunday, October 11 - Dr Mahesh attended 60 patients in Ukamnal village, and distributed free medicines to needy patients. Sr Laxmi attended 20 patients in the premises of the Vittal temple in Bijapur. She sought the assistance of government officials to distribute medicines to the needy.

Monday, October 12 - Dr Mahesh attended 112 patients in Rahimatpur village, and distributed free medicines to needy patients.

Tuesday, October 13 - Dr Mahesh and Sister Laxmi attended 321 patients in Ronihal village, and distributed free medicines to needy patients. They also attended 77 patients in Chikgarasangi village, and distributed free medicines to needy patients.

Wednesday, October 14 - Dr Mahesh attended 217 patients in Satihal village, a settlement having a population of around 5000, and distributed free medicines to needy patients assisted by Sister Laxmi and brother Mahaveer, president, Jagjyoti Basaveshwar Pharmaceutical Association.

HR Update: Novel training programme

Dr Sudhir Singh, consultant ophthalmologist & head - Department of Ophthalmology at J Watumull Global Hospital & Research Centre, had the opportunity to attend a training programme aboard the Flying Eye Hospital DC-10 when it touched down in Jaipur in early October. His training sub-speciality was vertical and complex strabismus.

Dr Robert O Hoffman, MD, professor, Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus at the University Health Care Moran Eye, Salt Lake City, Utah was Dr Singh's mentor for this programme. Dr Hoffman took lectures on various aspects related to strabismus as well as discussed cases and performed surgeries with the trainees (the photograph below shows Dr Hoffman operating a case aboard the Flying Eye Hospital assisted by Dr Singh).

Flood relief work in south India

The Global Hospital & Research Centre Trust and the Brahma Kumaris have jointly launched flood relief operations in the flood-stricken southern Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. A team of 30 people from the Brahma Kumaris centres of Secunderabad and Sanjeevareddy Nagar visited Rajoli village near the town of Kurnool town on October 8 and 9, where 400 families were severely affected by the recent flooding. Nearly 300 houses collapsed and the main bridge in the town also collapsed.

Sister Mahadevi of the Mahaboobnagar centre supervised the distribution of essential commodities, including 2 tonnes of rice, 100 kgs of oil, 500 mats, 300 blankets, 500 towels, 200 lungis, 200 sets of utensils, 50 bags of drinking water (each contained 100 sachets) and some saris and quilts. The distribution took place in an orderly manner. Many victims were also counselled.

Inauguration of Rotary International Global Hospital Blood Bank

Thanks to the Rotary International of Abu Road for sponsoring the establishment of the first phase of a blood bank at the Radha Mohan Mehrotra Global Hospital Trauma Centre. The first phase of the blood bank was inaugurated on 1 October in the presence of well-wishers whose involvement helped convert this project into reality. These included Dr Jay Prakash Vyas, District Governor, R.I. District 3050; Dr Harshad Udeshi, Past District Governor, R.I. District 3050; Prakash Kisan, Past President Black Mountain Rotary Club, USA and Ms Carol King, District Governor (via internet) and Dr Debasish Gupta, Programme Officer for Blood Safety, NACO.

The most significant aspect of this Blood Bank is that like the Global Hospital Blood Bank in Mount Abu, it will only accept blood from volunteer donors who donate blood for no profit or gain. Many of these volunteers are individuals from the Lions’ Club, Rotary Club, Shiv Sena, Mahavir International, hospital staff and dedicated brothers of Brahma Kumaris Gyan Sarovar and Pandav Bhawan complexes.

Now that the first phase (covering about 20 lakh rupees) is complete, the hospital will focus on the second phase which aims to generate blood components like RBCs, plasma platelets etc separately to cater to the specific needs of individual patients.

International Senior Citizens Day Celebrations

Global Hospital and the Rotary Club of Mount Abu celebrated the International Senior Citizens Day at Global Hospital, Mount Abu on October 1. About 90 senior citizens took benefit from talks delivered by dietician Mukti Wadhwa (Nutrition for active ageing), clinical head, P C Parmar Global Hospital Eye Care Centre, Dr V K Sharma (Eye diseases in elderly), anaesthetist and diabetologist Dr Shrimant Sahu (Exercise for senior citizens) and by medical officer - incharge, G V Modi Rural Health Care Centre & Eye Hospital, Dr Mahesh Hemadri (Ageing gracefully).

Dr Partap Midha, director, Global Hospital, felicitated six senior citizens from Mount Abu on this occasion, including the chief guest, Dada Chandrahas ji of the Brahma Kumaris, and the distinguished guest Dr Gyan Prakash, former director, Health & Family Welfare, Government of Rajasthan.

All the senior citizens participating in the programme were given coupons to under a free general health-check at Global Hospital during the month of October 2009.
